My Christmas Cactus starts are growing roots between the segments (above ground). What should I do?

They seem to be rooting into the ground fine, it just seems really odd that the starts would be growing roots into the air between almost every segment (each cutting has about three segments). Should I seperate and plant each individually? Or just leave it alone?

it sounds like it needs more room and to be buried deeper in the earth. I would try and plant them separately. Or at least give them some space, and perhaps new soil.
